Headlights - Alex G

This newest installment in Alex G's now extensive album run is a palatable and easy-listen indie soft rock entry. The production in general is much cleaner and polished than previous albums and yet there is a deeply interesting blend of so many different instruments and sounds. Lyrically, he remains a master of the peculiarity and whimsy. The characters of these songs feel a little older, perhaps reflecting on the anxieties of their youth rather than living inside them. There's a sense of quiet acceptance, a newfound peace that complements the album's smoother sonic palette. He's traded some of the nervous angst for a more contemplative and almost nostalgic, bittersweet wisdom, without losing the ability to make a simple phrase about a forgotten memory feel moving.
